Our Vision

Development and implementing low cost sustainable e-Health solutions for providing scalable and integrated health information systems to empower national and state governments to help to improve the coverage, quality and efficiency of health services based on stronger evidence based decision making.

Our Mission

We at HISP India have adopted a "broad-based participatory" approach towards strengthening public health system through capacity building and institutionalising the concept of "Use of Information for Action" for health workers and policy makers to take informed decisions for improving health systems. At the core of this lies the use of free and open source software to provide low cost sustainable and scalable integrated e-health solutions.

HISP started in India in 2000, with implementing a computer-based health information system project in Andhra Pradesh, which was later piloted in state of Kerala. Since 2006, activities gained momentum and we started to engage with more states, including Gujarat, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh.

Recognizing the contributions made by HISP in strengthening the health information systems at the state levels, the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare invited HISP, through National Health System Resource Centre, to participate at the national level in the reform processes in the health information systems under the National Rural Health Mission

Areas of our primary focus are:

  1. Design, development, customization, implementation and technical support for the Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) "DHIS 2".
  2. Capacity building at national, state and district/sub-district level users in the country.
  3. Design, development, piloting, evaluation and scaling of new e-Health initiatives.
  4. Strengthen systems of data quality improvement through conducting quality analysis of existing data and providing feedback to the states.
  5. Strengthen systems of health status analysis and their dissemination and use to the states.
  6. Build partnerships with academic institutions, community based organisations, development agencies and Public Health Resource Centres for institutionalising processes of integration of information systems through open standards and use of Free and Open Source Software, with focus on local solutions for development.
  7. Conduct workshops, seminars, short courses and training programs.
  8. Providing policy support on health information systems to governments.
Currently HISP India is working with Ministry of Health at National level on supporting efforts in health information systems reforms and policy issues; alongside working with various states on implementation of these reforms and providing the necessary capacity building and hand holding support.
